Summary

"Gregg Hurwitz's New York Times bestselling series returns when Orphan X faces his most challenging mission ever in Dark Horse。 Evan Smoak is a man with many identities and a challenging past。 As Orphan X, he was a government assassin for the off-the-books Orphan Program。 After he broke with the Program, he adopted a new name and a new mission--The Nowhere Man, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble。 Having just survived an attack on his life and the complete devastation of his base of operations, as well as his complicated (and deepening) relationship with his neighbor Mia Hall, Evan isn't interested in taking on a new mission。 But one finds him anyway。 Aragon Urrea is a kingpin of a major drug-dealing operation in South Texas。 He's also the patron of the local area--supplying employment in legitimate operations, providing help to the helpless, rough justice to the downtrodden, and a future to a people normally with little hope。 He's complicated--a not completely good man, who does bad things for often good reasons。 However, for all his money and power, he is helpless when one of the most vicious cartels kidnaps his innocent eighteen year old daughter, spiriting her away into the armored complex that is their headquarters in Mexico。 With no other way to rescue his daughter, he turns to The Nowhere Man。 Now not only must Evan figure out how to get into the impregnable fortress of a heavily armed, deeply paranoid cartel leader, but he must decide if he should help a very bad man--no matter how just the cause"--

One of the best Orphan X stories。 Lots of Joey, Peter et al and a new cast of horrible villains - and some ksort of’ villains。 A lot more grey areas for Evan to circumnavigate in this book and definitely more introspection than we are used to。 Thankfully this is all wrapped up in the detailed destructive action we know and love。 Great book。

“Dark Horse” by Greg Hurwitz (2022) First Edition Overall Rating 5/10 – DisappointingPlotOrphan X finds himself working for a drug lord whose daughter has been kidnapped by a rival cartel。 His ethical compass reeks havoc – the daughter is an innocent but her dad (the client) is far from that。CritiqueThe protagonist is an ethically minded super-assassin with all the money in the world and the skills to match。 By itself this is difficult to accept but, in this novel, we are expected to accept much “Dark Horse” by Greg Hurwitz (2022) First Edition Overall Rating 5/10 – DisappointingPlotOrphan X finds himself working for a drug lord whose daughter has been kidnapped by a rival cartel。 His ethical compass reeks havoc – the daughter is an innocent but her dad (the client) is far from that。CritiqueThe protagonist is an ethically minded super-assassin with all the money in the world and the skills to match。 By itself this is difficult to accept but, in this novel, we are expected to accept much more than that。 Frankly, for me, this “ethical behaviour” has stepped well over the line of reason。 More than that, we are expected to believe his skills are akin to some superhero from a Spike Lee comic。 I have been a great fan of the series so far but this one knocked me out of canter。 I would have rated it a 3 or a 4 expect for the fact that the author has left this on two huge cliff-hangers。 I will read the next one but we simply MUST get back to a “proper” story。 Writing StyleSimple prose and simple style with no sign or indication of “yesterday”, Easy, well constituted sentences with a great flow。 The change to “Jack Reacher style” has now levelled off – this gut is definitely having coffee with Lee Child。 Very simple to follow the movie in your mind’s eye as you read the words。Point of ViewWritten in the 3rd Person / Present Tense (Standard Convention) 。。。more

As soon as you think, this one is the best。 Gregg delivers another awesome, breathtaking chapter to X his lifetime。 This one has it all。 Fast paced action, human interaction on so many wonderful levels ❤️

This seventh book in the series is fast-paced, thrilling with Evan having to decide to help someone who may not deserve the kind of help he provides。 Enjoyed every minute of it。

Interesting to watch Evan stumble through his emotions as he slowly comes to terms with the other side of his personality。 His mind and body have been so conditioned to think, feel, or not feel, perform and focus。 He isn't quite 3 dimensional and yet there is a hidden softness that rounds him out。 Interesting characters old and new make this segment in the series packed with excitement, violence, humor and sadness。 Interesting to watch Evan stumble through his emotions as he slowly comes to terms with the other side of his personality。 His mind and body have been so conditioned to think, feel, or not feel, perform and focus。 He isn't quite 3 dimensional and yet there is a hidden softness that rounds him out。 Interesting characters old and new make this segment in the series packed with excitement, violence, humor and sadness。 。。。more

Liked this one as a personal dig into X and how he loves forward as a human not just an assassin。 Looking forward to how it moves forward although not super happy about the epilogue and how it implies the direction, feels like a step back in narrative direction。

My first read from this author, & now I want to read all his work。 The main character is not "saving the world," but is on a self-directed mission to save as many innocent lives as he can。 Sort of a Jack Reacher type of character, but with more money and technology; somewhat different training and motivation。 Same thriller action that kept me reading until 2 a。m。, when I ran out of pages。 I'm hooked! Well-done! Good action sequences, good characters, good story。。。 the only problem with this book is once you pick it up, it's seriously difficult to put back down。 Well-done! Rated 7/10 (or 3。5) I've read a few of the Orphan X series and still can't decide if I like them。 They're not a Lee Child (earlier books) or Vince Flynn stories that you want to keep reading til the end even if you should be asleep hours ago。 This one has Evan Smoak helping out a drug dealer rescue his "kidnapped" daughter。 Things are not what they seem and the body count is higher than a Kill Bill movie。 What I'd class as an OK read when you want something light to kill some time。 Rated 7/10 (or 3。5) I've read a few of the Orphan X series and still can't decide if I like them。 They're not a Lee Child (earlier books) or Vince Flynn stories that you want to keep reading til the end even if you should be asleep hours ago。 This one has Evan Smoak helping out a drug dealer rescue his "kidnapped" daughter。 Things are not what they seem and the body count is higher than a Kill Bill movie。 What I'd class as an OK read when you want something light to kill some time。 。。。more

3。5 stars (not as good as some of the earlier books in the series) but rounded up because。。。 it's Orphan X -- and who doesn't like an emotionally-damaged ordinary-kind-of-guy with "skills"? 3。5 stars (not as good as some of the earlier books in the series) but rounded up because。。。 it's Orphan X -- and who doesn't like an emotionally-damaged ordinary-kind-of-guy with "skills"? 。。。more

The Orphan X series is my go-to read to get away from my TBR stack。 This book can stand alone, but you have already read the previous books if you are a fan of Gregg Hurwitz。 The plot is excellent, the characters are realistic, and the dialog makes you understand what is going on with the characters。

I really enjoyed this book。 The narrator was easy to listen to and I think helped to make this a very enjoyable book to listen too。 There are so many twists and turns in it that it kept my attention and on the edge of my seat This was my first book by Gregg Hurwitz but it won’t be the last。 I highly recommended this book if you are interested in fast paced thriller crime stories You won’t be disappointed!!

Another terrific addition to this series。 I love the growth of the characters and really like dead bad guys。

A fast readInteresting, yet predictable。 X seems to always win, a fast read! I enjoyed the drug cartels involvement but could see the end based on the violence of the drug runners。

Reading an Orphan X book is a no-brainer for me, every single time。 Evan is trying to get his life back in order, after having his sanctuary blown up。 He leaves Joey to supervise the workmen whilst he goes and helps someone that some people might think don't deserve his help。 People are not always so black and white though, there are many shades of gray。I really enjoyed this book。 Yes, there were the usual thrills and MacGyver-esque adventures - but there were some very interesting subtexts here Reading an Orphan X book is a no-brainer for me, every single time。 Evan is trying to get his life back in order, after having his sanctuary blown up。 He leaves Joey to supervise the workmen whilst he goes and helps someone that some people might think don't deserve his help。 People are not always so black and white though, there are many shades of gray。I really enjoyed this book。 Yes, there were the usual thrills and MacGyver-esque adventures - but there were some very interesting subtexts here of what is important in life and how letting others in can be rewarding, even if it is very frightening。Evan Smoak is a damaged soul, that is absolutely true, but he has a big heart as well and I love the relationship he has with Joey, Mia and Peter。 The people who live in his apartment building are very low on EQ, just saying! I do want to have a living wall of my own now, but I think I will pass on the velcro suits etc, lol。 Can't wait to read the next book in the series。5 stars from me。 。。。more

This was probably one of my favorite Orphan X novels。 Some of the military/ammunition jargon was over my head, but that was okay。 Reading about him trying to be a better version of himself - and not even knowing how to go about it - is one of the things I look forward to。

The human side of X comes out more than before。Great story。

Ever since Book 5, it felt like something bad was bound to happen in the sequels。 Book 6 was leading there。 Book 7 just confirmed my hunch due to the foreshadowing of some, more emotional, events。 He can save almost everyone who needed him, but the one person he truly cared, he could not。 A steep price remaining to be seen in the next episodes。You know you have invested a certain amount of time in this series if you witness the arrival of。。。Vera III。
